The Shopsmith drill press has many features that the standalone machines can't even have added to them. The workspace (table) size is much larger on the Mark V than even the largest floor model drill presses have. This is because the table saw table is your drill press workspace. Again with the use of the rip fence and the miter gauge jigging up for repetitive operations is a snap.

With a standard bench top or floor model drill press you do have the ability to change the speed of the chuck. To do so you must stop the motor, open a cover, loosen some toggles and move the belt to the desired pulley configuration. Not so with the Shopsmith. With the power on and the chuck rotating you just crank the variable speed control until you have reached the desired cutting or sanding speed. This feature is a major time saver on projects requiring many holes of varying diameters.

With proper bits, jigs and setup you can bore holes up to 28" deep!
