The jointer is a must have for any workshop and the Shopsmith jointer is great quality. The variable speed really makes for clean cuts in all types of materials. My usual Shopsmith setup is in table saw mode with the jointer attached. With the guards in place it's safe to have both machines running at the same time. It's handy to rip a board and then immediately take it to the jointer.
